2007 December - NYC Trip

Friday Dec. 7 was our New York City trip.  Four Adult leader and 9 scouts traveled by train into the city and then hiked from Penn Station to 52nd street to stay at the apartment of James Kennely. We were greeted with open arms, a warm place to stay, and great pizza.  Mr. Kennely is a real estate developer, a New York firefighter, and a really nice guy. We stayed up late Friday night watching movies. The next morning, we set out to see the big city. We took the subway down to Battery Park and caught the Circle Line ferry to Liberty Island.  After a short visit to the Statue of Liberty and the ferry trip back to Battery Park, we walked past Ground Zero and then past the crowds on Canal Street to Mulberry Street in Little Italy. We stopped by the cannoli king at Caffe Palermo for lunch. We then continued north up to Union Square where we found the holiday market. We spent a little time shopping at the market before continuing on to Mr. Kennely's firehouse on 69th Street.  There we were treated to a great tour of the firehouse and some of the scouts took the opportunity to have a quick workout at the firehouse gym. We were all pretty hungry after all that walking, so we stopped for dinner and then headed back to the apartment.   After a quick breakfast the next morning, we said goodbye to Mr. Kennely and headed back to Penn Station to catch the train home.  It was a memorable trip and we are very grateful to Mr. Kennely for allowing us to share his home.
